World Vision Malaysia prepares for second Chosen event as the first saw 131 children bring smiles to their sponsors
PETALING JAYA, 12 OCTOBER 2021– International humanitarian organisation, World Vision Malaysia’s inaugural Chosen event in July received an outpouring of support as 131 children from Rovieng 2, Cambodia were given the opportunity to choose their sponsors. The organisation is now preparing for their second event in the same community.
Out of the 131, 8-year-old Runun chose World Vision Malaysia CEO Mr Daniel Boey, his wife and two daughters to be his sponsor. “It’s hard to explain that feeling of elation when my family and I saw a smiling Runun holding our family photograph in his hands. Runun said he chose us because we looked cute! We are looking forward to building a relationship with him.”
Chosen starts with people signing up to be a child sponsor. Then, World Vision will send their name and photo to a community where field staff will conduct a choosing event. After the event, the children will write a letter to their sponsors, telling them why they chose them as well as their aspirations.
Ten-year old Siphan, who wants to be a teacher when she grows up, chose Kuala Lumpur-based Ms Tan Chiu Si. “When I read that Siphan wants to be a teacher like me, I immediately felt a bond with her. This has been a very meaningful and memorable experience for me,” shared Ms Tan.
Four-year-old Chaiyuth whose favourite colour is green and happiest memory was when his parents bought him new clothes picked first-time sponsor Pastor Jegadass A/L Kuvalakrisnan to be his sponsor. Speaking about his experience, Pastor Jegadass said: “I decided to sign up for Chosen because it places the child first and empowers them to make their own choices. It’s truly an honour to be chosen by Chaiyuth.” Watch Ms Tan and Pastor Jegadass talk about their new sponsored children here: youtube.com/watch?v=TNLzufG-OUk
The Chosen campaign presents a powerful mindset change where the choice to choose is in the children’s hands. World Vision believes this simple act will reaffirm a child’s dignity and empower them from a young age.
Sponsors contribute RM65 per month that will provide the children, their families and community with water, sanitation & hygiene, health & nutrition, education, livelihood and child protection assistance. More than that, sponsors can cultivate a personal and meaningful relationship with the child, and witness their growth as they journey alongside the child through milestones in life.
